CCTV Security Recorders

Zosi Security Recorders are the backbone of a security camera system. They provide system customization, remote viewing, and secure local storage. Network Video Recorders (NVRs) use IP Cameras - Digital Video Recorders (DVRs) use Analog Cameras.

FAQs

What is a Security Recorder? What does it do?

A Security Recorder (like a DVR or NVR) is the central hub of your CCTV security system. Its main job is to receive video feeds from your security cameras, process and compress the footage, store it onto a hard drive, and allow you to view live feeds, play back recordings, and access your system remotely. Think of it as the brain and storage unit for your surveillance video.

What's the difference between a DVR and an NVR? Which one should I choose?
  • DVR (Digital Video Recorder): Typically works with analog or coaxial-based HD cameras (like TVI, CVI, AHD) connected via coaxial cables. DVRs are often a cost-effective solution, especially if you're upgrading an older analog system or prefer using coaxial wiring.
  • NVR (Network Video Recorder): Works with IP (Internet Protocol) cameras connected via Ethernet (network) cables. NVRs generally support higher resolutions, offer more flexible installation (can utilize existing network infrastructure), and often feature PoE (Power over Ethernet), which simplifies wiring by sending power and data over the same cable.

Which to Choose? If you prioritize higher image quality, flexible setup, and network features like PoE, an NVR is usually the modern choice. If you have existing analog cameras or are on a tighter budget, a DVR might be suitable. ZOSI also offers Hybrid DVRs that can support both analog and IP cameras. Choose based on your camera type, wiring preference, budget, and desired features.

How many channels do I need on my recorder?

The number of channels determines the maximum number of cameras the recorder can connect to and manage simultaneously. An 8-channel recorder supports up to 8 cameras. Consider how many areas you need to monitor right now, and it's wise to choose a recorder with 1-2 extra channels than currently needed to allow for future expansion (e.g., 4-channel, 8-channel, 16-channel).

Does the recorder come with a Hard Drive (HDD) installed? Can I install or upgrade it myself?

Some ZOSI recorder models come with a pre-installed surveillance-grade hard drive (please check the product description). Other models are sold without an HDD, allowing you to choose your own. Most ZOSI recorders support standard 3.5-inch SATA internal hard drives, and you can typically install or upgrade the HDD yourself. Refer to the product manual for maximum supported capacity and installation instructions.

How long can the recorder store footage? What happens when the HDD is full?

Recording duration depends on several factors: HDD capacity, number of cameras, video resolution, frame rate (FPS), compression technology (e.g., H.265+ saves significant space), and recording mode (continuous, motion-triggered, scheduled). ZOSI recorders usually default to "loop recording" (overwrite), meaning when the HDD is full, it automatically deletes the oldest footage to make space for new recordings, ensuring continuous operation.

Do ZOSI recorders support remote viewing? How does it work?

Yes, all ZOSI recorders with network capability (most DVRs and all NVRs) support free remote access. You can view live video and playback recordings from anywhere using:

  • Smartphones/Tablets: Download and use the free ZOSI Smart App (available for iOS and Android).
  • Computers: Use the free ZOSI AVSS Client software (available for Windows and Mac).
  • Simply connect your recorder to your router/internet, and add the device to your App or software account.
What smart detection features do ZOSI recorders offer?

Many ZOSI recorders, especially newer models, offer advanced smart detection features (check specific model specs):

  • Motion Detection: Detects any movement in the camera's view.
  • Person Detection: Uses AI to specifically identify human shapes, reducing false alarms from animals, leaves, etc.
  • Vehicle Detection: Uses AI to specifically identify vehicles.
  • Customizable Detection Zones: Allows you to select specific areas within the camera's view to monitor for motion.
  • When an event is detected, the system can trigger recording, send push notifications to your ZOSI Smart App, send email alerts, and more.
Does the recorder support audio recording?

This depends on both the recorder model and the connected cameras. The recorder needs to support audio input/processing, and the cameras need to either have built-in microphones or support external microphone connections. Please check the specifications for both your chosen recorder and cameras to confirm audio recording capabilities.

What are the benefits of using PoE with an NVR?

PoE (Power over Ethernet) is a major advantage of NVR systems. It allows a single Ethernet cable connected between a PoE NVR port and a PoE IP camera to transmit both video data and electrical power. This eliminates the need for a separate power adapter and cable for each camera, greatly simplifying installation and reducing cable clutter.

Is installing a ZOSI recorder difficult? Do I need a professional?

ZOSI products are designed with DIY (Do-It-Yourself) installation in mind. Basic setup involves connecting cameras, a monitor (optional, for local viewing/setup), the network cable, and power. The initial software setup is guided. If you're comfortable with basic wiring and network settings, you can likely install it yourself using the provided manuals and online tutorials. However, professional installation is always an option if you prefer.

How can I back up important video footage?

You can easily back up specific video clips or time periods. Connect a USB flash drive or external USB hard drive to one of the recorder's USB ports. Then, use the recorder's local menu (accessed via a connected monitor) to search for the desired footage by date/time/channel and export it to the USB device. Some models may also support backup over the network via the AVSS client software.

Does the recorder need to be connected to the internet all the time?

No, an internet connection is not required for the recorder to record video locally or for you to view footage directly on a connected monitor. However, an internet connection is necessary if you want to use remote viewing features (via phone app or PC software), receive mobile push alerts, or perform online firmware updates.

Do ZOSI recorders come with a warranty? How can I get technical support?

Yes, ZOSI provides a limited warranty on all our products. Please refer to our official Warranty Policy for details on duration and terms.
